VAT and Income Tax

Does MTD for VAT apply below the VAT registration threshold?

VAT registration, rather than turnover alone, is the starting point. VAT-registered businesses must generally keep the required digital records and use compatible software unless an exemption applies. Voluntary registration does not by itself remove these requirements.

When do sole traders and landlords enter MTD for Income Tax?

The rollout uses gross qualifying income from self-employment and property: over £50,000 in 2024–25 means a 6 April 2026 start; over £30,000 in 2025–26 means 6 April 2027; over £20,000 in 2026–27 means 6 April 2028. Check eligibility and exemptions separately.

Do quarterly updates replace the annual tax return?

No. Those in scope send quarterly updates through HMRC-recognised software and still complete a tax return. A document summary or spreadsheet export is not, by itself, evidence that an update has been submitted to HMRC.

How long should we keep VAT records?

Normally at least six years. HMRC specifies ten years for businesses using VAT OSS or that used VAT MOSS. Keep the underlying invoices and records as well as the figures submitted; check which rule applies to your business.

Your records and accountant

Can we keep spreadsheets in an MTD for VAT workflow?

Yes, with compatible software and the required digital links. Where records move between software products, manual retyping or copy-and-paste is not a digital link. Linked cells or CSV/XML transfers can form part of the workflow.

What should we agree with our accountant?

Our suggested handover includes original invoices, the reporting period, payment references and unresolved questions. Agree who reviews VAT treatment, who approves corrections and which software performs the HMRC submission. Keep document preparation and filing responsibilities explicit.

Is Yelnitax presented here as HMRC-recognised filing software?

No. This website presents document preparation and review. It does not submit VAT returns or Income Tax updates, and it does not establish HMRC recognition for Yelnitax. Confirm the filing software, supported exports and access separately.
